Project Maji
About
We are a non-profit social enterprise, a water donation NGO that exists to empower and transform lives by providing
sustainable, effective and solar-powered water solutions by enabling you to donate clean drinking water to rural communities across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Back in 2015, our CEO and Founder, Sunil Lalvani, witnessed the all too common scene of two children drinking water from a road-side puddle in rural Ghana. Feeling compelled to help, he used his experience in consumer electronics, to develop and deploy a solar-powered pump, to sustainably deliver safe water to a village in rural Ghana; coining the CSR project ‘Maji’ (Maji meaning water in Swahili). Fast forward from there, Project Maji now operates as a stand-alone entity, a pan-African water donation NGO that has touched the lives of approximately 115,000 people across Ghana and Kenya via sustainable delivery of safe water into their villages.
We need to rethink water supply models to fight rural water poverty. Failed infrastructure investments in Africa over the past 20 years represents a lost investment of 1.2 billion dollars and millions still lack access to water. The failure of these current approaches propelled us to challenge the rural water landscape through a market-based approach in which we have combined the strengths of entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Project Maji is a non-profit drinking water charity that harnesses business expertise to deliver sustainable access to safe water.

Products and services
We design, develop and implement solar-powered water kiosks, called the Project Maji Cube.
Products: Mini Maji, Standpipe, Majiplus and Re:Maji
Automated Cashless System: Our kiosks feature a simple e-payment method to ensure that money is securely collected, allowing communities 24-hour access at the touch of a tap.
Service Guarantee and Remote Monitoring: Unlike other charities that provide clean water, our work begins when the taps are running, contrary to traditional charitable water models that focus on system delivery.
Cluster Approach: Striving for sustainability and universal coverage in the regions we operate, we work in a ‘cluster’ approach, installing our Project Maji Cubes in adjacent villages.
Our Pumps and Solar Panels: We use IP67 rated solar panels to power our high-efficiency submersible pumps, coupled with a controller that runs at varying time intervals to ensure water-pumping is possible even during low sunlight conditions.
Filtration – Our River Solution: The Mini-Maji, our solar-powered water Cube, which usually pumps from underground aquifers, has been adapted to pump water from a river.
